After her leap into popular musical movies with the well-received Pitch Perfect (2012), it seems like Anna Kendrick is the new cherished golden actress of musical films. According to BWW, the single Cups (You’re going to miss me when I’m gone), which the actress covered in the film, has just reached the tenth position in the Billboard charts, an accomplishment for any recent musical film.
It shouldn’t come as a surprise, since Kendrick has a significant musical theater background: she has played Dinah in a Broadway production of High Society, as well as Fredrika Armfeldt in A little night music. The former role earned her extensive recognition, and she was even nominated for a Tony award with only thirteen years of age.
Her incursion in musical films began with the less known Camp (2003), but success truly arrived with Pitch Perfect, and it seems to be only the beginning. She is currently filming another musical: The last five years, in which she plays the leading female role of Cathy; and she’s supposedly in negotiations to play Cinderella in the all-stars stage-to-movie adaptation of Into the woods.
It seems like a successful musical future waits for the young actress in cinematographic musicals as well as on the stage, and fans of musicals should definitely keep an eye on her.
